Holidays To Cairo

Welcome to Cairo! Perched over the Nile River and sporting enough history to star in at least a dozen Indiana Jones movies, Egypt’s capital city is just waiting for you to explore it.

From touring the pyramids and the fabled Sphinx during the day to sipping coffee with new friends in the evening, Wotif’s Cairo holidays are the stuff dream getaways are made of.

Things to Do in Cairo

Yes, we know: The Pyramids of Giza are by far the crowning glory of any Cairo holiday. Set in a desert encampment just a few metres from the edge of modern suburbia, they're easy to reach with a guided tour. Stand at the base of the biggest, mighty Cheops, and ponder the 4,000-year-old question: how did they build this thing? Then pick your awed self up off the sand and explore the many tombs, pyramids and, of course, the Sphinx, which are all within walking distance of each other. (Pro Tip: Please keep in mind that any of these historic structures may be closed from time to time for maintenance and restoration—you may want to call ahead!)

Back in the centre of the city, spend a day exploring the one of biggest collections of antiquities on the planet at the Egyptian Museum. Set on the banks of the Nile, this museum boasts 100,000 artifacts spread over 15 kilometres. Tutankhamun's treasure is a highlight, as are the Royal Mummies' Halls that let you make friends with ancient royalty.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Shopping? Oh yes, there will be shopping! Our Cairo holiday packages leave you with plenty of money to spend in a city that can resemble one giant marketplace. Revel in the hustle of traditional markets as you bargain for rugs, silks, painted papyrus and other Egyptian fineries. The Bulaq Market, the Sharia al-Muski and Souq al-Gomaa Markets in Islamic Cairo are among the best. There are also plenty of modern shopping centres if you'd rather browse in air-conditioned comfort. Speaking of comfort, if you plan on doing a lot of shopping, pick out one of Wotif’s Cairo car hire options—you’ll want a place to stash all your bags.

Hungry? We bet you are. Egyptian cuisine packs all the flavours of the Middle East and Cairo into one place—in short, we hope you brought your eating pants. Gorge on herb-fried chicken, bean dishes, soups, spicy kofta, succulent skewered kebabs and grilled fish. Downtown Cairo has most of the city's budget-friendly authentic options, while many top establishments overlook the Nile.

What better way to spend holidays in Cairo than with an evening out after a tasty meal? Make friends with some of the locals over a shisha and strong Arabic espresso in coffeehouses throughout the city. Alcohol isn't a big part of life in Cairo, but it is freely available outside the month of Ramadan. Many restaurants turn themselves over to drinking and dancing later in the night, and you'll find bars with live music and belly dancing dotted around the city. Most are legally required to close at midnight, after which only those with a tourist licence stay open.
